2022 has definitely been a challenging year.
All of us throughout the European Union experienced difficulties, discouragement and even impotence.
An unexpected emergency came out and new measures have been put in place with the aim of keeping a balance both in our society and in the economic sphere.
The EU is on the first line with its commitment and tools in order to secure a State of wellness and pace.
For this reason, the plan to secure our stability involves several areas of our daily life.
“The list below highlights key initiatives for 2023. It is based on our discussions with the European Parliament and Council and will be complemented by the upcoming Commission Work Programme and continued interinstitutional dialogue.
The 2023 Commission Work Programme will be also largely inspired by the outcome of the Conference on the Future of Europe.
This reflects not only our shared commitment to better listening to the expectations of citizens but also the resounding success of the Conference, both as an exercise in participative democracy and as a way to improve our policy making.” State of the Union 2022 – President von der Leyen’s letter of intent.
The initiatives which the Commission plans to undertake in the coming year in a nutshell:
• Continuing to strongly support Ukraine
• Adopting measures to support Europeans to overcome the energy crisis
• Supporting small and medium enterprises
• Cutting the EU’s dependency on Russian fossil fuels
• Investing further in renewable energy and hydrogen
• Leading globally on climate adaptation and protecting nature
• Continuing to stand up for democracy, for the rule of law
Climate adaptation:
This means the need to revise the current rules governing the EU’s electricity market with a proposal to establish a bank for storing hydrogen. In addition, at this point, it is crucial to revise the waste framework to reduce waste with an environmental impact of waste management. It follows a change in EU norms concerning animal welfare.
European Democracy:
A system of government by the whole population or all the eligible members of a state, typically through elected representatives. The aim of establishing a democratic status is a getaway to respect and appropriately represent all members of a community. Therefore a democratic state is such because of its ability to act on behalf of its own population. The EU’s upcoming steps toward a more democratic system will be a defence package together with an initiative for protecting the EU democratic sphere from covert foreign influence. The anti-corruption package is in the works and a European disability card has been proposed in order to officially recognize the necessities of those who require assistance or support.
Revamping the EU democracy is in line with the promotion of a European way of life which is made of several aspects.
First of all, establishing a comprehensive approach to mental health. Then, the recognition of qualifications of third-country nationals, a legislative proposal on the digitalisation of travel documents, revising the Directive combating child sexual abuse and at last, a proposal on Cybersecurity Skills Academy.
